Beyond the Obvious: Novel Tech Challenge in Modern Trading System

Beyond the Obvious: Novel Tech Challenge in Modern Trading System

Date: October 15, 2025

Start time: 5:30 pm UTC

End time: 8:00 pm UTC

Location: London

As a global market maker, Optiver faces engineering challenges that push systems to their limits. From processing vast amounts of market data in microseconds to ensuring reliability under the most extreme conditions, performance is only part of the story. Many of our toughest problems sit outside strategy code, shaped by the unique demands of our environment.

In these talks, we’ll explore two examples: how our engineers push Linux beyond its typical limits in pursuit of low-latency performance, and how we’ve built a CI platform that can handle hardware-level workloads while staying fast and reliable.

As spaces are limited, we’ll review all registrations and confirm attendance via email by October 7.

18:00 – 19:00 (BTS) Doors open
19:00 – 20:00 (BTS) Tech Talks:
Massaging the Linux Kernel in a Low Latency Environment
Running a High-Performance Build Platform
20:00 – 21:00 (BTS) Networking and refreshments

Chris North, Core Development Lead

Optiver runs much of its software on Linux: a proven operating system widely used across industry. Over time, we’ve built up significant experience in wringing out the best possible performance. In this talk, I’ll cover some of the more surprising limitations we’ve encountered, the techniques we used to diagnose them, and the ways we’ve resolved these issues.

Cian Lane, Global Head of Developer Experience

Our requirements at Optiver puts demands on CI that go beyond the typical case. We frequently need to run workloads directly on hardware, which introduces challenges you don’t see in more conventional environments. In this talk, I’ll cover some of the obstacles we’ve faced in making CI both fast and reliable under these conditions, and how we approach measuring performance in a way that gives meaningful results.
